For a blockchain transaction to be recognized, it must be appended to the blockchain. In a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) based systems, Validators carry out this task and receive rewards for doing so.
For this system to remain secure, it must have a mechanism to ensure that a malicious group cannot take over the validation function. PoS accomplishes this by requiring that validators have a quantity of the blockchain tokens (or ‘stake’), ensuring that any attack would require a large fraction of the tokens on the blockchain. This is vastly more efficient alternative to Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining, allowing standard, low-energy and cost servers to provide these services.
Extending this, chains also allow DPoS (Delegated Proof-of-Stake) or LPoS (Liquid Proof-of-Stake) functionality, allowing token holders (like you!) to delegate their validation rights to other token holders (validator) without transferring ownership to them.
